Esperanza

You really should come in,

sit down for a while

rest your elbows on the table

sip some exquisitely brewed Darjeeling

with just a hint of cream

The season is crowded

The sun is in hiding

The earth is sleeping

The world has gone mad

You really should

let me take your jacket

exchange it for a soft lap blanket

good conversation

about everything and nothing at all

You can leave your obligations

out on the front porch

(they’ll be okay for a while)

give me your list, I’ll hold it for you.

You really should exhale

you’ve been holding your breath

for so long

you can breathe, here:

this is the space between thoughts.

This is a place where

hope dances in the Dark

defies the absence of light

and brings her own.

This week, Carmi of Written, Inc. has brought us the theme "Strangers Among Us". For many reasons, the strangest of strangers in my house is the christmas tree. I don't celebrate this particular holiday, but my daughter does- so the little critter sits in a corner and quietly glows in spite of me.

For me, this time of year is a time of quiet reflection. Waiting. Exhaling. Renewal. Darkness. Companionable Silence. Contemplation. Solitude.

For the next two days, the sun will dip lower on the horizon and scarcely surface long enough to brush the edges of the sky with the softest of distant rays. While the rest of the world is plugging in strands of lights, decking the halls (and maybe even their relatives), wrapping presents and frantically doing all the last-minute things... I'll be sipping tea, riding my fatbike, running in the snow, making snow angels and plotting a winter camping trip.

Need a reprieve from the madness? Stop for a moment. Breathe. Allow hope. Don't become a stranger in your own House.

Lovely... the photo is interesting but your words made this post very meaningful for me; we are in the middle of hot, bright summer - the Christmas tree seems so anachronistic.

Thanks for the reminder to stop and just enjoy. I don't really do too much for Christmas, but all the running around around me is exhausting. Have a great ride. Winter camping huh?

Once again your words hit just the right spot.....funny how that is...
But you have left me very curious. Who decorates this little tree who waits in the corner?

What a beautiful, peaceful post. I probably could have really used it before my side of my insane family came over for their Christmas time with the kids. I would love to go sledding and making snow angels! I would love to sit by a roaring fire on our patio with snow all around. What a wonderful way to spend the day :)

I love that while you don't celebrate Christmas, you allow your daughter to. Not because I think everyone should, I just like it. My step-sister has been celebrating Hanukkah, along with Christmas, since we were little. The only one out of her whole family who did... but we all watched as she lit her candles... I loved it!

My son told me once a few years ago that he was going to turn Buddhist. I told him that he could do as he pleased as long as he took it seriously, and learned everything he could about it. Of course, that never happened. I guess he was testing the waters.

It sounds like you'll be enjoying a very peaceful day... enjoy and be safe!!

The neighbors are staring at me. Iʻm in your driveway waiting for you to come home so I can take you up on your offer. Who could resist such a peacefully tempting offer?

I didn't realize you don't do this holiday, either. I'm glad you do it for Des! It will mean a lot to her later on.

I miss out on most of the commercialism because of work. And that's JUST fine! Like you, I'm longing for the deadline to pass to I can try to bag a winter peak... Not something I've always got the stamina to do!

I wonder if all trees sit in a corner. Ours certainly does every year; the corners may change from time to time but you can't miss the smell of pine.
A simple picture enhanced by words, if not a 1000.

It's possible, Bob. However, not every tree is wedged between a Gary Fisher Utopia on a Kurt Kinetic and the dog's couch. That's gotta be a little unusual, even for Alaska. I may have been being generous when I said 'corner'.

The pooches came over to lick my cheeks after I read your warm, wise words. Ti, you're that light in the corner. All year.

Sigh. That sounds so peaceful and inviting. May I have a cookie with my tea, please?

Amen, girl! This is really gorgeous, Ti.
